I think that what you are trying to do with Matlab is not an option for 99.9% of PRT platform users as you admit yourself.
Platforms like Amibroker are interesting and when you look at the price it initially seems expensive but works out to be about $14 dollars a month for the first two years and then $7 a month after that for their mid range package. Still that is $14 dollars a month that you have to make before you get any profit and you won’t be doing this while you learn your way around the platform and the new coding language so the first year could eat into your profits quite considerably if you are a small time trader.
So it would be interesting to hear from anyone who uses other platforms as to whether the benefits and customer service are worth the hassle of changing platforms and brokers. Also as you point out the spreads then may not be as competitive and so that is even more money that you need to win to cover those costs.
06/17/2018 at 8:06 PM #73525The problem in IMO is not the hassle with the support. The more serious problem is that PRT’s handling of certain situations can cause financial damage to ones account. This “extra losses” (can be real losses or loss of profit because of trades being closed prematurely) do not show up in our beautiful backtests. And we all know how hard it is to program a profitable strategy already without this “extra losses”.
06/19/2018 at 6:12 AM #73622@Vonasi – you come across as a very positive person and for that I commend you but to try and suggest that sending in a ticket about the outage and getting an immediate response makes everything ok about the support chain I am sure you must accept is very misleading – it was IG that replied to you not PRT as it was a system wide outage and obviously IG support were very much in the know and able to respond immediately (as they did too when I called in about it/no one has ever complained about this type of support)
This is simply not comparable to trying to resolve a specific technical issue with PRT via the frustrating support chain as has been mentioned countless times by many others in these forums so am surprised you bring this up as being a good thing/everything is ok with the support
Enough about the support each to their own understanding of what is going on with it – have had enough going on about it and PRT will take it as bashing their service etc.
@Despair – yes I have been following the ATR miscalculating thread and saw that Nicolas marked it as resolved and that there were no posts from PRT – these are similar issues I have come across when using the 1 second timeframe and what is being shown in PRT compared to what is at IG and also tried to work around them by messing about with the trading hoursI just don’t think the IG/PRT integration is robust or reliable enough most probably due to the customisations IG have requested of PRT (who knows what those might entail!)
I have concentrated my efforts on making my code as absolutely simple as possible with the minimum possibility of the strategy stopping which has bought to light many odd things along the way – how any of these ‘complicated’ code strategies on this site (as I too once used to spend months coding/working on) can be trusted to run correctly is beyond me and I saw in another post (are we all deluded) that Nicolas says it is possible to succeed with auto-trading but I wonder if that is with using the PRT/IG integration…
I am not aware of any other platforms would suggest but as much as I am aware of all these issues and trying to stay away from PRT knowing ‘it is bad for me’ I can’t seem to help myself ‘just try that one last tweak in the code’ – I think it’s time to get into coding rehab…!

06/19/2018 at 6:52 AM #73628MaxT – yes I try to stay positive (although my girlfriend may disagree with me on that one!) as negative never helped any situation. Unless you are making a battery I guess!
My post was not intended to sing the praises of anyone’s customer service – I was just highlighting for everyone that IG had been having some issues . Some have made it clear that they do not bother to send in problem tickets so they would not have received any information on their problems – so I was doing them a public information service!
You might note that my tone was one of surprise that I had heard anything back so quickly. My customer service expectations are as low as yours!

06/19/2018 at 8:26 AM #73648Wondered why my Demo SB Account got to be down over £3k overnight! Found 7 orphan trades on the Dow … all going the wrong way of course! Why is it hardly ever orphan trades that end up going the right way!!??
Edit:
I tend to mistrust until proven otherwise and so one can’t help thinking that if enough Systems stop (due to outside Platform reasons – see attached ) and that leaves Orphans heading the wrong way then a healthy profit is the result for ‘somebody’ and a loss for us until we wake up and think wtf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

06/19/2018 at 8:27 AM #73649@MaxT: I actually reported the problem with the closing prices also to PRT and got the reply that his wasn’t true!? I answered it is definitely true and referred to the ATR-thread here on the forum. After this I received no further replies. This is exactly the problem I have with the customer support. Often they simply deny that the reported problem exists. Or they wait a long time to answer that state that the problem really happened but don’t offer any solution. sigh…
I also agree with you that one has to be AT LEAST extra lucky to be long term profitable with PRT. I managed to have a profitable first quarter inspire of all the errors but I would have earned significantly more if my strategies weren’t stopped countless times.
@vonasi: To give an alternative even if it is unpopular. If I wasn’t so happy with Matlab, I would have a closer look at Tradestation. This seems to be a good system and I personally know people that have been using it several years for their auto-trading that make money. Also it’s code is pretty easy to read (it is used in many books and therefore I have translate a lot to PRT), so so somebody used to PRT it should be no big problem to make the transition. That being said, I have never used Tradestation myself and there are surely also problems. Additionally I think the margin requirements are higher than for IG because you are trading futures and no CFD. But like mention earlier this difference will be at least much smaller when the new ESMA rules come.

06/23/2018 at 9:52 AM #74155Just for the ones thinking there is a progression with PRT’s problems – there is not. Actually the opposite. This strategy (which is the only one that I still ran on PRT because it is my most successful strategy and I didn’t want to miss a good trade), was running several months without bigger problems. Now it stops about every weekend when it is holding a position. This time I’m lucky again and the position is in profit so I at least don’t lose money but this is really pointless – I will not turn it on again this time.
Gladly I’m almost done with my matlab version of the strategy so I can start testing this on demo next week.

Please let us know how it goes Despair? 🙂

On a Matlab dedicated website please.
06/27/2018 at 11:07 AM #74519Very best o luck @Despair! Hope to meet you in the Millionaires Club one day… or a MatLab Forum… 😉
06/27/2018 at 11:53 AM #74526Thanks Grahal and MaxT. So far working with Matlab is a blast but since Nicolas is so sensitive on the issue I will not post here on the forum any experiences.
If you want to get in touch with me without censoring contact me via email or in the IG Labs forum (no dedicated Matlab forum but IG’s forum open for everyone using their API no matter which programming language). My nickname there is ExhaleTrading.
