Yes it is a moral dilemma. There are people that are willing to put their code out there for everyone to discuss and share for free and then there are some people who are willing take that code and see it as something they can sell. A few variable name changes and a maybe an additional filter that misses two or three losing trades in the last decade to turn it into an ‘original’ code with a different name.

Some would say that the generosity of the original coder has been abused and others would congratulate the seller on their entrepreneurial skills.

Personally I’m a little morally uncomfortable with it and it is perhaps one of the reasons why I have never developed or shared strategy codes within the forums – I don’t like someone I don’t know taking my work from me for free and selling it without even asking!

It has started to get to the point where I am even a little uncomfortable to release indicator code to the library as they all have a value and someone else could abuse my generosity and sell my codes pretending that they are their own. Once the ‘MarketPlace’ is up and running I may end up just releasing them there for a small fee so that they can’t be copied because the code is hidden and no one is being scammed by being asked for a lot of money for a copy of a free code.

Perhaps I am missing a trick and should be stealing the code others have been so generous with – but I sleep better at night.

    You are right Vonasi !

But, regarding the Marketplace, it will have the same problem … unless the code has never been published somewhere

We’ll find all free PRT code with a few modifications on the marketplace …

Anyone who is fine with free code, why buying code in the Marketplace?

Anyone who doesn’t care about free code and doesn’t want to spend time with it nor with learning to code, why not buying ready-made code in the Marketplace, be it original or modified free code?

MAKSIDE – That is a possibility and will ultimately come down to Nicolas and how ‘original’ he feels a strategy code or indicator code is before allowing it to be sold in the MarketPlace. If lots of unoriginal codes are being sold then it won’t take long before someone like ‘Anonymous Algo’ spots that they are all taking the same trades and producing the same equity curves and once that is perhaps pointed out in the forums then sales will drop off and reviews will turn bad. The reputation of the MarketPlace will be slightly damaged too – so I guess everyone has to trust that Nicolas will do a good job of weeding out the copy and paste sellers.

Wouldn’t you buy Peugeot because it performs similar to Toyota, or Volvo much like Bmw?

    Allure is an interesting point.

Peugeot design and make their own cars, Toyota design and make their own cars, as do Volvo and BMW. If some parts of those cars are the same it is because another business has designed, made and sold that part to them all because it works well and is cost effective to them. They did not go into the part makers factory without permission and then walk out the door with a box of parts to use on their cars for free.

If I walked into a car showroom and a salesman sold me a car for a lot of money and then I went outside and found that the same cars were available free on the street for anyone to take and use then I would consider that to be a scam. If the salesman tried to then tell me that the car he sold me was not the same as the free ones on the street because he had given it a different name then I would definitely have been scammed!

Force India did so with Mercedes …
    (and got away with it)

that’s why as soon as there is innovation, hundreds of patents are filed

my opinion doesn’t change. if one day you intend to sell your strategy, especially not to share it before.

… which will not work with software; as soon as the copier changes the variable names, any judge – the source code at hand – will readily tell that it is no copy-right infringement.

(I have been there in a lawsuit with 20M at stake)

Sadly, no judge or aiding expert will judge the functionality of the program. “It could coincidentally work out the same, plus its goal is obvious” (in our case, gain $).

    In your country ?

Normally in France, it is protected by the law article L112-2,L 111-2, ..  but i never met the case personally

No – they went to the Mercedes factory and took some photos and were given some design drawings and then a cup of tea and sent away to make their own ‘original’ parts that just happen to be identical. Mercedes need their B team to get in the way of RedBull and that pesky Max as much as possible.

@Makside I’m sure you are using code snippets coming from the forum in your own trading algorithms, right? That’s NOT A PROBLEM for me, this is the purpose of the website, you know.

I know that posting codes for free, on my own website, will somehow benefit for other people to be able to make their own way through the road to be profitable, and I’m proud of that.

So please, do copy, inspire yourself, and improve codes, otherwise, I have no reason to wake up in the morning to maintain our expanding community! 😆

Thanks everyone, keep coding and sharing ideas and please be kind with each others.

(TIP: Don’t trust everything you read on the internet … )

@Nicolas, it’s not about being kind of each other, it’s about being fairer and respecting the work of others. That’s why people like AnonymousAlgo exist..

But you are right, if you want to keep getting up in the morning, everyone can do what they want..  the important thing is algo to promote PRT. On this point, i agree 🙂
