Hello all,
I know this question has been asked at least once in the past, but as far as I can see, the last time was years ago, and responses were few and far between – so I’m going to ask ask it again:
IS ANYONE OUT THERE ACTUALLY MAKING REAL MONEY WITH TRADING ROBOTS / AUTOMATED STRATEGIES?!
When I say real money, I mean LIVE trading, ACTUAL money…
I fear that the very limited response to this question in the past means that the answer is effectively “no”, and we are all, to all intents and purposes, wasting our time.
I would be delighted if I am wrong – so please speak up if you are making regular, REAL profits.
Thanks in advance.
Grubby

https://www.prorealcode.com/topic/the-most-important-question-in-this-forum/
This is a forum dedicated to sharing programming and strategy ideas on the PRT platform for the general improvement of all those who enjoy doing that and generally the sort of question that you have asked does to not benefit anyone. Usually the person asking is either looking for a reason to continue because they have suddenly worked out that making money by auto-trading or trading in general is harder than they first thought or they are fishing for free strategies that actually work.
Hopefully the above thread will provide the answer to your question if not then please enjoy the forums and with time and dedication you will learn a lot.
06/10/2018 at 10:56 PM #72805Thanks Vonasi, I hadn’t seen that thread.
Apologies for my question – I didn’t mean to offend you or anyone else. I thought the “general trading discussions” forum was for general trading discussions. My bad.
I’ve been coding my own strategies for a while now, so felt entitled to ask the question. By the way, I asked “are WE all deluded”, not “are YOU all deluded”! In other words, I meant no disrespect to anyone on this platform.
Don’t worry, I’m not fishing for winning strategies. I asked the question in good faith. Surely, making money is why everyone is here.
Anyway, judging by the numerous answers on the thread you directed me to, I would say the outlook is pretty bleak! I notice though that in your reply, you say you are up 109% after 23 months (one of the very few vocal winners in that thread!). Congratulations. How has it gone since January?
Again – I’m sorry for upsetting you. I really do just want to get a sense of how many people are making money at this. Nothing more sinister than that!
Thanks,
Grubby

https://www.prorealcode.com/topic/a-challenge/
Here’s a new hypothesis:
people who made a lot of money with autotrading changes to another type of investments like real state, open they own investment firm, hire professional programmers, etc, etc etc…
They have such a wonderful life that they do not see you post asking the same question one and another.
So, keep learning and enjoy the way.
06/11/2018 at 7:15 AM #72813No problem VeryGrubby. No disrespect taken. Maybe my answer was a little too abrupt but if you visit any trading forum your question pops up time and time again and the OP never seems satisfied with the answers that they receive. As Leo says if you are really successful at this trading game then you are unlikely to be hanging around on a forum waiting to answer this sort of question. The best traders are humble about their success and do not think they are winners – they believe that they are just doing all right and tomorrow it might all go wrong. They do not shout about every win.
As for my trading since January. There has been very little as the market structure has changed. I was mainly trend following on big indices but one of my emergency stops got hit and that was a signal to stop strategies and sit on the sidelines for me. Not losing money is half the battle won in this game. I have also been busy doing other stuff such as enjoying sailing around Greece and you really need to dedicate a lot of time to trading to be successful at it. If I have any time then I spend it developing mean reversion strategies at the moment as that seems to be what works best right now. Still if I were to tot up my trades since January you could say that I am still winning as I think that I am at least £10 up!
06/11/2018 at 7:37 AM #72817Cool. Good points.. thanks
06/11/2018 at 9:54 AM #72843I’ve been through hundreds (thousands?) of strategies and related discussions the few last years. A small part of automated traders are doing well, believe me.
Why are they so discreet on the forums? Simply because it takes time to generate enough good performance in “real” times to say that: OK, my strategies seem correct, but who cares?
Imagine that you are a manual trader, how long will it take you to determine if your trading is profitable enough to tell you, I am a real, successful trader in the long run? years without doubt! It’s exactly the same for an automatic trading system. Of course, the backtests are there to reassure us, but we also know that, obviously, we do not know what tomorrow will be done and a new cycle of tests, uncertainties and evaluations of the real-time strategy begins. . And so on.In conclusion, yes the automatic trading works, as certainly as 1 + 1 = 2

06/11/2018 at 1:21 PM #72879I’m definitely making real money with my strategies. I had so much profit in the first quarter that I’m reluctant to write the percentage because nobody will believe anyway. In april I ran into serious platform problems. Or better put the problems that existed already for a long time finally caused financial damage to my trading account. Anyway also after this technical issue my strategies continued to deliver.
However, you can make serious money with automated trading.

06/11/2018 at 4:47 PM #72921Im also making profits at this point at basicly have been making profits since day 1 going live. ive had my systems in demo by then for a month or 2 and saw that they where doing what they where designed to do, so i put them live. That being said i cant quit my dayjob just yet lol.
I wrote a little something for newbies who have questions like this: https://www.prorealcode.com/topic/thoughts-on-profitable-trading-systems/
Hope u find it helpfull
06/12/2018 at 10:06 AM #72971My experience is having back tested for 6 months then I decided to go live. I have lost thousands and must admit feel angry and depressed when I hear people are killing it. I do believe testing for only 6 months is the reason. My backtesting results for 26 weeks was profit profit on lovely profit. Now I am live 3 weeks and every week is a loss. I know this can work and people are making money and some make serious money but I am yet to find the answer. My 2 cents worth.
Congrats to the successful traders but it does hurt hearing this
06/12/2018 at 11:18 AM #72981@ChrisNYE I am so sorry to hear of your loss. 🙁
I also admire you for your honesty!
My backtesting results for 26 weeks was profit profit on lovely profit.
Might I ask please, do you mean you Forward Tested for 6 months? Backtesting is running in the past when optimising etc. Before we go Live / Forward Test with real money we need to Forward Test with Demo / paper money.
Also you might like to consider posting on here the Auto-System that has lost you the most $$$$ so that the experts on here can see if they can spot why this happened?
My thoughts are, at this stage for example, that you have optimised for the Up period / Bull market and then you have gone Live in a down period??
It can be very very useful to quantify our errors so we learn from our mistakes?
06/12/2018 at 11:26 AM #72985I backtested for the past 6 months then went live 2 weeks ago. I did not paper trade or demo my system went straight to live account and have lost thousands.
I feel I have optimised the shit of out my strategy that I have just data mined 6 months and used the ema settings that generated the highest win % thru optimization. In handset this forum has been great. On the other hand it has been confusing and keeps me doubting myself whenever I read a new post.
I think I need to back test for 4yrs on 4hr charts and then go to demo for 2 months then go live.

think of it this way
if you had done the opposite you had won thousands
so its possible to win if you find the optimal settings

Can be confusing? or maybe I’ve got you wrong what you mean @Eric?
Have you ever had a System that lost loads (in BT) you can see mainly sellshorts on long-ish up periods and mainly buys on long-ish down periods? So you think to yourself, ahaa I know I’ll reverse the buys and the sellshorts and I’ve got a winner! 🙂
Oh NO I haven’t … System loses around similar amount even after direction reversals??

Chris, (so I can sleep at night! 🙂 ) please confirm you are backtesting with the tick by tick box selected?
