There is not much to say juanj. My girlfriend and I got a bit bored of the rat race and read the book that you found and it persuaded us that you didn’t need to be rich to go off and see some of the world in a sailing boat. So we worked hard, saved our money and spent very little and learned to sail and bought a boat and then sold our apartment (which was a big mistake – we should have kept it and rented it out but at the time we left the internet was not what it is now so property management from abroad was very difficult – but hindsight is a wonderful thing) and then we sailed off over the horizon. That was fourteen years ago and we have slowed down but we have not been tempted back to the rat race yet.

Annie Hill’s book inspired us so we named our boat after it and that is also my profile name. V-oyaging ON A S-mall I-ncome. The book is a bit dated now and the sailing world has changed a lot since it was written. Not for the better unfortunately but then not much ever changes for the better.

Anyone can do something similar but in this world of instant gratification that we live in now not many put in the real effort and you need effort to fully appreciate the significance of what you are doing. When we left navigation was challenging, done on paper charts with a pencil and tides were looked up in a book and calculated using sums that you did in your head! ….and communications were terrible but nowadays everyone can know exactly where they are on the planet to within a few metres just by turning on their phone and use the same devise to speak to their mum from anywhere in the world! If something breaks now you can just watch a video on YouTube and within ten minutes think that anything can be fixed just by watching a video. The sailing world is now full of people with too much money on very big cheaply built boat that are twice the size they used to be and the people on them have barely a clue what they are doing but I’ll put up with it till something more interesting comes along.

As for the email address – I prefer not to give out my email address to forum members but I am quite willing to discuss most subjects within the forums. Sometimes a little bit of personal stuff can be a nice distraction from discussing how to get the perfect equity curve without curve fitting! 🙂

That is amazing, had a hunch that it was where you got your inspiration from!

Have actually exited the rat race myself at the end of 2017 after I quit my day job with the idea of trading full-time. My wife and I then moved to a smaller coastal town where we are still renting a small duplex apartment overlooking the sea from where I conduct my trading as well as some other side hustles.

But as is the nature of us humans, we soon find ourselves doing more of the same and so start longing for the next great move/adventure.

And to be honest the idea of living on a small yacht, sailing from one port to the next has become very appealing! I have no desire to accumulate any wealth or earthly possessions but rather to live life to it’s fullest never wanting to look back in regret of ‘what if’

I would love to hear your thoughts on how you feel sailing has changed? Also if there are any other resources you can point me to that might assist me in looking into this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Money is useful when you are alive but of absolutely no use when you are dead.

Recently a close relative of my girlfriend died of cancer. She spent the last years of her life sorting out her own parents complicated estate after they passed away and then her brothers estate when he died soon after them. The estates were very large involving various properties and investments and she enjoyed absolutely none of the money but lost a huge chunk of her final years sorting it all out. The money does not come our way and I am glad of that.

Your outlook on life seems like it is on a sound path juanj. I’m not sure that any advise that I can give is very relevant as the people sailing off over the horizon these days are very different to those who were doing it when we did. The basics are – learn as much as you can. Definitely learn to sail. Buy a boat and go sailing. How bad can it possibly be!

If you haven’t got much money then you have to be a very practical person and be able to fix everything. If you are not a very practical person then you need a lot of money!
