I have recorded the data (returns) of the various American stock markets in a histogram:
From left to right: Dow Jones, Nasdaq, S&P500
The width of the histogram says something about the volatility or risk of the index.
With a little imagination you can discover a kind of bell shape in the different graphs, a shape that is very similar to what is called the normal distribution in statistics…
