The first MTF strategy that I coded opened a position correctly on 27th July and should have closed it on the 2nd August. When the strategy is back tested the position is closed but the live strategy did not close it. In fact a total of six valid sell signals have been ignored.

The strategy simply looks at RSI[2] levels on 1 hour, 30 minute, 15 minute and 5 minute time frames. If they are all below a certain level it buys and if they are all above a certain level it sells. It is long only on DJI 5 minute.

The trade has not been orphaned – well at least that is what the ‘open positions’ window is telling me anyway.

    I will send a report.

Let’s specify that this only concerns a demonstration strategy on a DEMO server from IG.

Correct – and I am wondering if the problem was due to the recent IG demo server problems rather than any specific issue related to MTF. Maybe the trade got orphaned but for some reason was not shown as orphaned. I’ll wait to hear what IG have to say on it.

The trade was opened by an automatic strategy but I had to manually close it. When I now check my demo platform ‘Detailed Report’ the profit shows up in ‘All’ but not in either ‘Manual Trading’ or ‘Automatic Trading’! I guess it is a bit of both so it fits neither category. Maybe we need a ’50/50′ category!

I’ve just spotted another trade in another strategy (not MTF) that seemed to have been on the market longer than average. On closer inspection the back test would have closed the same trade out days ago. It is not shown as orphaned. This one was also on demo but on a different account.

I won’t bother to send a report this time. Both the problem trades are on PRT via IG accounts so I suspect IG will just ignore the reports anyway because they are on demo and from a recent chat with IG it seems they have little interest in dedicating any resources to demo issues.

I noticed that the number of demo trades that my platforms have opened recently is very low so I just checked another of my strategies that usually opens a lot of trades and found that it failed to open three positions on live trading that were opened in the back test. I think two of them are not there because IG deleted the wrong trades when I got them to delete two non closable orphaned trades last week but the last position should have opened and didn’t.

Now I have to wonder exactly how many of my strategies across my three platforms are not opening or closing positions at all.

I just checked another strategy and that also has failed to open 4 positions that are opened in a backtest!

When I check, I note similar between Demo Live Fwd Test and Demo Backtest.

I guess we have to accept that it is a Demo Platform and not a Test Platform?? 🙁

So GraHal you also have strategies that have not opened trades in forward test but have in back test?

I have never had this issue before. What my back test does my forward tests always mirror exactly and to have it on so many strategies rings alarm bells. I am thinking it is to do with the IG demo server problem that they had on the 9th August.

I have just gone through and stopped and restarted all my strategies which was not the work of a moment with 68 strategies across three platforms currently on test and that damned stupid ProOrder AutoTrading window that keeps jumping back to the top!

Hopefully I will start to see more trades opening now and hopefully if they get opened they won’t be left half orphaned and never closed. If not then something is seriously wrong with the demo platform or IG’s server I guess.

It has been a terrible few weeks for gathering forward testing data – strategies stopped that had open positions due to the IG server problem , then IG deleting two open positions of mine by mistake, then two strategies with orphaned trades not closing and now God knows how many strategies that have not opened trades since the 9th August when they should have done.

In my mind it is about time IG took the demo side of their business more seriously as this is the shop window that is supposed to make people decide to trade live with IG and if a newbie had the issues I’ve had this month he or she would have no confidence in using IG for trading. I feel sorry for PRT because a lot of people would blame these issues on them as it is their platform we are testing on and spotting these problems on but in my mind all these issues have been created by IG’s lack of interest in properly supporting demo trading.

Time for a beer now that I’ve got that off my chest!

Having stopped and restarted all my demo strategies that are on forward test I still find that my quantity of trades is very low – so I have just started going through all 68 strategies and comparing the back test with the live trading and I see that I am still having issues.

This strategy opens a trade in the back test since the date that I restarted the strategy but failed to do so in live trading. At the moment I have no idea whether my platform is actually trading all my strategies which is making forward testing live completely meaningless.

I will send a report as this is on a PRT sponsored IG demo account so I might actually get a response. My other two accounts are IG direct demo accounts so I am not hopeful of any solution if I find issues there.

For some reason this topic had been marked resolved when no conclusion had been reached so I have marked it unresolved again.

Can the difference be accounted for by spread.

Was the conditions to enter a trade very close to a price level on Live, but didn’t quite make it!?

….and I found another one. This time on the FTSE100. It should of opened a trade but it didn’t. Backtest did.

    I will send another report.

No it is not a spread issue. Trades are entered at close of day and are not price dependent.

…and another one. This time on a different IG account and PRT platform.

    Screenshot_7

I have just realised that the only strategies that are trading correctly are on faster time frames such as 15 minute and 1 hour whereas all of the strategies that have failed to open positions are on daily or weekly time frames. Does anyone else have end of day daily or weekly strategies on test that they can check to see if they have failed to open positions?

Unless PRT/IG come back with a solution today then I will put a simple strategy on test overnight that simply buys and sells and see if it actually opens a position.
