Select Active Chart

Hi – anyone know how it is possible to choose which chart (when have multiple charts open linked or not linked) is the ‘active chart’ that updates with the instrument when clicking on an instrument in Lists, Screener, Alerts results etc.?

    Thanks

I’m sure  it always opens a new chart at the far right, even when same instrument chart is already open. Suits me as then I then always know where to go to see what I just clicked on in a list, alert etc.

Hi GraHal cheers for the reply – not sure what you mean by ‘at the far right’ or why a new chart is opening every time you click on an instrument in a List, Screener, Alert

    My example->

I have 3 charts open all identical in terms of indicators/layout – monthly, weekly and daily – one is set as the template chart and the other are all ‘linked’ so whenever I click on an instrument in a List, Screener, Alert all 3 charts update to the selected instrument – works perfectly/no problems

I now add a 4th chart that is not linked and has different indicators/layout and I want this chart to update whenever I click on an instrument in the screener results (and I want the other 3 linked charts to update whenever I click on an instrument in a List)

Hope that makes a bit more sense?

I know the reply most probably is ‘not possible’/you can’t have it any way you like and that is fine I don’t expect PRT to magically know which chart I want to be the ‘active’ chart but I was thinking maybe something like clicking a chart to make it ‘active’ would set it to be the one to update when an instrument is then clicked on but alas that does not seem to work

The only way I have found so far is to close the other charts until the one I want to be the active one starts to work which obviously isn’t a fix as I can’t keep deleting/recreating charts

As I am typing this I am thinking perhaps the only way is to have separate templates – one with the 3 charts and the other with just the 1 but that would be a pain to be looking at instruments in a List with the 3 charts and then whenever a screener result pops up have to open the other template and then click on the instrument in the screener then re-open the previous template to keep working with the List instruments so hoping someone can enlighten me as to how PRT ‘chooses’ the active chart?

    Cheers

Either I misunderstood the question, or maybe you know about linked charts but think “linked” means linked to the main template one within “your first three”, rather than linked to a color group (white if using complete version rather than premium) regardless of whether the maintemplate is inside the linked ones or not?

Unless I’m mistaken, when you click on an instrument in the List, all your linked charts to white group will change to the new instrument. But as an experiment, try unlinking ALL your charts, then if you click on an instrument in the list, a new graph should appear (like for Grahal).

So, if you try unlinking all your first 3 charts you talked about (which I assume you know how to do with the little chain link button in lower left corner), and linking the fourth chart to the white group, then when you click on an instrument in the list, it is now the fourth chart and only this one that should get updated with the new instrument.

In summary: what is linked to white group is what will be updated when clicking on an instrument in the list. Hoping I did understand the question and this did what you’re after?

Hi Noobywan – many thanks for your reply and also I have never said thank you in general for your many VERY helpful posts I have read 🙂

Right ok that is news to me about ‘if no charts are linked then a new chart is created every time an instrument is clicked on in a list’ and now makes sense what GraHal is saying

I think you have understood my query basically I just want to be able to choose which is the active chart to update when I click on an instrument in a List, Alert, Screener etc.

I hoped if I first clicked on a chart and made it active (title bar goes solid colour) then clicked on an instrument that would be the chart to update but it totally ignores me having clicked on the chart first and updates another chart (or group of linked charts)

I then hoped perhaps if I set a chart as the template chart then this would be the one that updated when clicking on an instrument but again this doesn’t work it just updates the same chart as before that I didn’t want to update

Is difficult to explain but very simple to ‘see’ when working and I don’t think anything too unusual a requirement but yeh perhaps I will just have to live with it and manually enter the instrument every time into the chart I want updated

Ok, so if I’ve understood, and you want to choose which one is updated when clicking in the list, then the path of “least number of click effort” is probably to save your default 4 graphs working space with just one of the graphs linked (ideally the one which gets changed most often by clicking in the list) and all 3 others unlinked.

This way, a click on the list just updates the one you want to change most often from the list.

And should you want to switch which one of the other 3 graphs gets updated from list rather than the chosen default linked one, you’ll just need to unlink the linked one, and link the one you’re about to update, and finally there click on instrument on the list, only the newly linked one should change. It’s a bit more work than just clicking on title bar of chart, but it should still be less work than manually changing instrument from chart menu each time if that still can help a little.

Thank you! Yes you have totally nailed it – basically whichever chart is set to ‘linked’ status (even if it is not linked to any other charts) is the one that updates when clicking on an instrument in any list

When I want to use another chart I first ‘unlink’ all/any chart(s) and then choose the ‘link’ option on the chart(s) I want to be the ‘active’ chart(s) then click on the instrument and voila/eureka etc.! 🙂

Wow I didn’t know it was so complicated! 🙂 I’m not even sure I’m doing it right now … more by chance (than knowledge) if I am? 🙂

I always use all charts unlinked all the time.

Thank You Noob for your patience and expert knowledge in this and your many other replies (as Max says).
