Hi,
Excuse me in advance for asking this question but i think many of us new members are asking the same question in our heads.
Coming in to this world with severals ideas but quickly realizing that one’s ideas were not as good as they sounded on paper (or in my head) after trying them in a backtesting mode.
I’ve scanned the forum for ideas and found a couple that worked ok when backtesting.
So my question to you is this, what strategies do you think have worked best live for you? If you could just give some hints on where to start? I myself like strategies that trade more often than less often because then you get a feeling of control.
I thought it was worth a try to see if there is a veteran or two who wants to share some ideas with us 🙂
Cheers!

Me too! I like strategies that are always on market 100% of the time or > 85% being more realistic.
When trying to find a strategy that works good in Live, if it only trades once per day, per week or even less then too much of life passes by while waiting to know if it is as good in Live as it appeared to be in backtest!? 🙂

I’m 6 months in to live trading and have a similar need for instant feedback. Hopefully I can shortcut you somewhat from this experience.
First, I am net profitable and had a great starting equity curve which encourages me greatly. Secondly, I identified how I was making money last year manually to get a focus to maximise a small account by trading opening drives on a 1min chart across 4 futures markets. I built 30 of the suckers to leach the indices and am slowly culling them down as I was/am guilty of several newbie mistakes (so far I have cut 4).
So, although not yet a veteran by algo experience I can deduce that my most reliable systems are mostly breakouts systems followed by fading strength(mean reversion). My best market is NDQ because its fast/volatile and suits my personality. I am 100% onboard with Grahal, too much time passes on higher TF strategies to get a workable data sample. If I’m going to get punched in the face I want to get it over with and work out where I went wrong to improve!
I should add, and have questions myself about peoples approach to system ideas. If one thinks of each system as an individual trade then you can build opposing systems to minimise drawdowns or counter other weaknesses. What I see through the forums seems to be some very clever Super Mario all-in-one type strategies.
On the Nasdaq I have a carefully balanced selection of outright hard shorts, opening drive longs, a couple of trend follow longs and surprisingly both long/short counter trend scalps/swings. All can be written on the back of a napkin. This is so far a low win rate approach.
I believe it has allowed me to accelerate my learning curve somewhat and hone in on effective areas. What’s the alternative? Wait…wait.. then wot? Start again. Uh.
The breakout success surprised me because I could never often bring myself to take breakouts and now realise the power. Also, do be mindful what the charts look like the past 6 months. My systems were built in a bear market with 3-5months backtest data but have largely operated in a massive global rally. Watching strategies slowly become less effective as the markets slowly roll over is fine if you have something to take the otherside.
One thing I will add to my long reply to a simple question is this: Start with your end goal and work backwards (Desired lifestyle/Time frame/personality/risk tolerance/ability) to allocate time and measure progress. This seems to be a field of dreams and can easily lose years to a computer trying to lay a golden egg!
All the best.

At least you have here an overview of all the strategies that are backtesting well in this thread :
I will soon add a Live Equity Curve update of the best ones (above 3 stars and acceptable drawdowns ) in order to give an even more accurate information;
Don’t hesitate to point out strategies that you have found interesting in the forum and that are not in the library ;
Cheers
